Jerome DeWitt was born in New Jersey and studied at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY. He was an art instructor and illustrator. He exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. He was a member of a number of professional groups including The Salmagundi Club, The Salons of America, and The Allied Artists of America.
The subject is the Wickford, RI Baptist Church. The building which was erected in 1816 looks much the same today. Wickford is a quintessential Southern New England village on the western shore of Narragansett Bay.
