A rare Georgian sterling silver dish cross. Fully hallmarked by the London silversmith Robert Makepeace l, dated 1774. 4 1/4 inches high, 10 1/2 inches wide. 21.5 troy ounces.
The central fluid burner bears the engraved crest of an unidentified military leader shown as an armored arm holding a spear aloft. The silversmith has been mentioned by the English silver scholar Ian Pickford as a "good maker" in Jackson's Hallmarks.
The legs, feet, dish supports and arm terminations are beautifully cast. The condition is excellent save for a minute imperfection in one leg as shown in the leg detail (below).
