A rare Britania standard silver tankard having a domed, hinged lid and a molded cast thumb piece. Hallmarked by the London silversmith Henry Jay (active 1692-1727,died 1738) and dated 1719. Beautifully engraved with the arms of Pemberton. 6.25" high. 21.085 troy ounces.
By descent in the Stevens family of Hoboken, New Jersey. John Stevens lll also known as Col. John Stevens served in the Continental Army after graduating from Kings College (now Columbia University). At the conclusion of the War he purchased a large, river side estate which became Hobokan. Stevens was a clever inventor and later endowed the "Stevens Institute of Technology."
