Unsigned American School. The Ocean Express was designated a California Clipper. She was built in 1854 by J.O. Curtis of Medford, Massachusetts for the concern of Reed, Wade & Company. Captain Thomas Cunningham, her first skipper, supervised her construction. It is said that The Ocean Express was considered one of the finest ships that ever sailed out of Boston.
The Ocean Express measured 215'2" long, and had a beam of 41'. While her figurehead is noted as being a gilded eagle, however, our picture shows a figurehead of a man!
Absolutely untouched original condition. Oil paint on canvas. 19 1/2 inches high, 29 1/4 inches wide sight size. Mounted within an early gilt wood frame measuring 24 inches high and 34 1/4 inches wide.
