The USS Marion was launched at the Boston Navy Yard on 24 April, 1839. She was a Sloop of War, 3rd Rate. She mounted 16 thirty-two pound guns. She saw duty in South American waters as well as the Caribbean. This picture shows the Marion off of Gibraltar before 1848.
When the Civil War broke out she was at Portsmouth, New Hampshire. On the 14th of July,1861 she was sent in search of the Confederate Cruiser "Jeff Davis". The USS Marion was a work horse. Her armament was modernized and eventually she was converted to a screw steamer. Sbe was sold out of the Navy in San Francisco in 1907.
