An exceptional mahogany Queen Anne pole screen having a stitch-work polychrome bouquet within a narrow frame and raised on a slender shaft tipped with an acorn finial and on a vasi-form turned pillar on a plate supported by tripartite cabriole legs with pad feet.
Probably Rhode Island. Circa 1750-1770. 54 1/2 inches high. This fine example retains an old and likely original finish. Minor repair to top of one leg where it joins the plate. The silk backing on frame is degraded due to the natural fragility of silk over time. Signed with a monogram under one of the feet.
Descended in the Herrick family of Southampton, Long Island. James Herrick, born in Leicestershire in 1603, settled in Southampton in 1653. There are Herricks living in Southampton today.
