A Federal period cross-banded and heavily inlaid mahogany games table with an inlaid checker or chess board within rosewood cross-banding and ebony stringing and quadrants with quarter-fan inlays. The frieze having tiger maple cross banding framing line inlaid panels and a narrow drawer retaining the original oval brass pull. The square tapering legs with line inlay and inlaid cuffs. Southern New England,likely Connecticut. Circa 1800. 28 1/2 inches high, the top 18 3/4 square.
The secondary wood is poplar throughout. The oval brass is stamped with a sunflower and stalk as seen in the detail picture below.
This is the finest one drawer stand I have seen in my nearly 40 years of dealing! Before 2008 this piece would have easily brought $7500.00 The condition of this stand is excellent with just a few scattered resorations to veneer and a light refinish to blend color.
