A very folky whaling scene titled "Whaling In New England" and signed "Tom Dull" probably mid 19th century. Water color on paper. 19 1/2 inches high X 27 1/2 inches wide. Minor creases and tears.
This dramatic depiction of whaling is quite likely sailor-made. The whaleship is set against a mountainous shoreline and the long boat is pitched in the wake of the struggling Sperm whale. The Harpooner in the bow of the long boat is poised to strike his prey for the final time. The artist "Tom Dull" is obviously a humorous, amusing alias for the amateur artist.
