Thomas Butterfield Sr. England, 1768-after 1828."A Brig-Sloop Beating to Windward" Oil on canvas. Unsigned. Very good condition. Sight size 20 inches high X 28 inches wide. Frame size 23 1/4 inches high x 31 3/4 inches wide.
A Royal Navy Brig Sloop chasing an enemy vessel off Gibraltar, ca. 1800-1810. During the Napoleanic Wars the Royal Navy built huge numbers of these well armed and nimble vessels which required less trained crew.
This picture illustrates the term "Weather Gage" perfectly. We see the English vessel being driven down and forward towards his quarry. Eventually he will reduce his heel to level his port or starboard guns.
